IND vs NZ: India head coach Gautam Gambhir on Monday made it clear that he will not restrict his batsmen in Test cricket as the more the risk taken the more the benefits. India adopted a similar approach in the recent rain-affected Kanpur Test against Bangladesh. Not a single ball could be bowled on two days due to rain but India eventually won by seven wickets.

"Why do we need to restrain him? If he can play natural cricket, if he can score 400-500 runs in a day, what is wrong with that? We will continue with the attitude of 'the more the risk, the more the risk, the more the chances of failure'," Gambhir told reporters ahead of the three-Test series against New Zealand starting on Wednesday.

He said, "There will be a day when our team gets out for 100 runs but we have to accept it. We will continue to support our players to play risky cricket. We want to move forward in this way and want to get results whatever the situation."

Gambhir, however, was quick to add that adapting to the conditions will remain key for his team in the future as well.

He said, "I said in Chennai that we want a team that can score 400 runs in one day and draw the match by batting for two days. This is called moving forward. This is called adapting to the circumstances. This is Test cricket. If you always remain in the same routine, then you cannot move forward."

Gambhir is confident that his players have the ability to overcome any situation by maintaining the team attitude of pushing their limits.

He said, "There are many batsmen in our team who can bat for two days. Certainly, our first goal will be to win the match. If such a situation arises that we have to play to draw the match, then this will be our second or third option."

The Indian coach said, "We do not want to play any other type of cricket. We want our players to go out on the field and play their natural game."

Gambhir admitted that the New Zealand team could pose a tough challenge to him but he would leave no stone unturned to achieve a favourable result.

He said, "New Zealand will present a completely different challenge. We know that their team is very good and they have some very good players. They have players who can hurt us, so these three Test matches will be a tough challenge." Gambhir said, "We respect them completely but we will continue to play tough cricket. Whether it is New Zealand or Australia, we want to win every match for our country. We are not thinking about the future right now. Our focus is only on the series against New Zealand right now."
